Architectural Photography in Kent - Turner Contemporary, Margate.

Turner Contemporary in Margate by David Chipperfield Architects.

I don’t think I’d visited Margate since I was a child and even then it wasn’t a visit to go and photograph a building. I would have probably just sat on the beach, eating cucumber sandwiches, asking my parents for pennies for the amusements! Now though, I don’t think I could get bored of seeing the Turner Contemporary building.

I’d seen a few images of the Turner Contemporary Gallery but it’s not until you’re there that you can appreciate the size and the beautiful lines of this building. I wasn’t the luckiest with the light on that day, but still the building produced some great shadows from it’s lovely angles and I was lucky enough to have a little blue sky, between the grey clouds.

Have you spotted the seagull on the roof? … just to make sure you know it’s a traditional British seaside town!

I must have taken close to 80 images, just of different people walking up and down the stairs, at different speeds so I could make sure I got what I wanted to put together afterwards. With my architecture photography I really like to make sure I have my bases covered so I don’t want to slap myself afterwards for missing something!

Even the staircase outside the front of the gallery was a great design detail to photograph, I do also have a slight thing about stairs so maybe that’s why I had to take this photo too!

I was hoping to get back here this year, but that will have to wait for the time being, it would be great to photograph the gallery again when the sun is a little lower in the sky.

Another building in Margate that I had to stop off to photograph is Arlington House by Russell Diplock & Associates. It is a residential block of flats, built in 1964 and is loved by fans of brutalist architecture. Something about it just really suits being a black & white image. I hope you think so too!
